Asakusa and the unexpected

by

Eva wanted to see the visitor center in Asakusa designed by Kengo Kuma. We arrived late afternoon and spent the last hour of daylight at the coffee shop on the top floor with an incredible view of the Sensoji Temple and surrounding area.

After the sun dipped below the horizon, we explored the neighborhood and walked right into a crowded street. Spectators were lining the streets to see the Akita Kanto festival. These guys balanced these masts of lanterns on their backs and foreheads. They added more and more lengths of bamboo until the entire assembly bowed and flexed dangerously above the crowd. I always find that the best experiences in travel happen by chance.
