Kurama

When the size and energy of Tokyo got overwhelming, we headed to Kyoto for some quiet time. We headed up to the sleepy town of Kurama in the mountains north of Kyoto. This train took us through a tunnel of maple trees to the last stop.
The walk to the Onsen (hot spring) lead us through a quiet little mountain village.
I got to soak alone in this outdoor onsen for over an hour. The mountain air was crisp compared to the humidity of the cities. It was so relaxing to watch the breeze sway the cedar trees like a tidal wave. This was one of the most peaceful experiences of my life.
We hiked further up Mt. Kurama to the temple that watches over the surrounding hills and valleys. Not a soul to be found here besides the monks that work in the temple. This was a refreshing contrast to the crowded temples in Kyoto.
