Friday

by

Started the day before the sun rise at 4:30 AM for a ride into the University Heights area with Andrew and Kevin. The morning temperatures were freezing. My fingers felt like icicles. The legs felt great at the way down to Fashion Valley, but the Texas St. climb completely drained me. I felt like I could walk up faster than I was climbing. Andrew and Kevin are monster climbers for going up with only one gear. Can't wait to see these guys on roadies. We made a stop at Lestat's Coffee House for a nice large cup of java to keep me going for the rest of the day. Kevin saw a guy sitting in front of a chess board and couldn't resist the challenge. The match took an hour, but I didn't mind sinking into the huge couches with a hot cup of coffee and good company.

I went to work for the rest of the day. After a long days and nights doing homework and studying for midterms, it was nice to just let loose and get my hands dirty wrenching on bikes. When I started working last year, the shop was always full of people and everyone would throw jokes and insults back and forth, but I feel like the shop has lost some of its magic as everyone started to graduate. Almost everyone came into work at one point on Friday and it finally felt like the shop that I've grown to love. We even went to Porter's Pub after work just like old times and plenty of beers and laughs were passed around.

Friday was a bit of a slow day so we tuned up some of the shop mountain bikes for some post pub mobbin. Chris led everyone out to "beer point" out past Torrey Pines and La Jolla Scenic. Mountain biking single track trails after dark buzzed with no lights is probably the most dangerous thing we could have done, but it was the most fun I've had on two wheels for a long while. Times like these are reminders of why I started cycling and why I love it as much as I do. Cycling is taken too seriously sometime, but at the end of the day riding bikes should be about having fun.
